Week In Review 3rd April

5 ways to save on printer ink – Did the “print in black & white, ”print draft mode" and removed the unwanted images to save on printing when in university. Didn’t know the choice of fonts will help too. Swedish automated store I am amazed by the level of automation Robert llijason has achieved with his store. I love and envy this idea and wish that I can think of that smart. Rise and fall of an app company A very realistic look of an app company not into games. Not every app idea can make waves and make the owner very rich 4 year old beheaded in front of her mum It is such a tragedy. All because of the action of a crazy man. I always read of bombings over the Easter weekend. It saddens me to hear of such news. Then over the Easter weekend, there were bombings which killed children’s and women. It makes it seem like the world has no hope Assess and optimize your workspace My workspace is generally cluttered. Sometimes I get frustrated at work and just stop work and clear any things that should not be there. Quite a waste of time […]

Citect SCADA Alarm/Trend & Modnet

A client engaged me onsite to troubleshoot their Citect SCADA installation. I saw they had few problems. 1. Client station could not see alarms and trends 2. Intermittent communications with some IO Devices Of course they had some other problems but those could be solved by diving into the graphics and cicode, so I shall not bother. They had a very peculiar setup. 1. Redundant IO Servers, which the secondary is out of action, leaving only 1 server 2. Different software version on server ( Citect Facilities 7.1 SP3) & client ( Citect Facilities 7.0 SP2) 3. IO devices were mainly via ethernet, but goes through ethernet-serial convertor, coupled with a few stations running on modem as well. Problem 1, i had guessed that it could be due to the different version of software. I checked through the project configuration and it looks similar. Network is established between server and client. I checked through the syslog.dat to discover that there were errors of the server refusing connection, with a hint of system parameter AllowLegacyConnections to be set. I added the entry [LAN]AllowLegacyConnections to true. It solved problem 1 instantly. But recommendation would still be to use same version for both […]

Chanced upon you

The time from February to April sometimes can be harsh. Memories from Facebook will throw up pictures from the past. February was the month Kaelyn was born. April was the month she passed away. So it can be emotional. I don’t hate it. I always welcome the surprise opportunity to see her face once again. It is just like bumping into a good old friend on the street. This picture was taken at her 1 month baby shower looking cherubic. She was wearing a beanie with some curly hair for effects. She didn’t have much hair at that time. She didn’t have much either at 3 years old. I called them feathers. Of course met with disapproval from Kaelyn 😂 It’s indeed an amazing experience to carry her in my arms, to care for her even with her special needs. My dad says she is so daring to just go off alone. But that’s just her. Her curious mind and courage prompts her to discover and taste what life has to offer, even though she couldn’t even sit up on her own. Big furry dogs don’t scare her. She wants to pet them. She loves to go fast in her […]

why bother investing

I was book browsing at Times Bookstores today and I came across a few books with regards to stocks and investment. I was keen to purchase books of this subject as I would like to learn more about it. I am not sure of where to start so I just grabbed one which was a compilation of a writer from the mainstream business paper. I can’t remember the title of the book. I thought this looks rather interesting. I could just read broadly and see what’s interesting to go more into. But then I saw a book INVEST LAH! An average Joe’s Guide to Investing just beside it. I remembered I had this book from a 2 hour free seminar I attended before. Deciding to be prudent in spending just this once, I didn’t buy any book, but went home with the intention on finally start reading what was on hand. And I started just this evening. On Section 1, the authors began telling the reading the what and why of the stock market and IPOs, and how do you profit from the stock market. Why bother to invest? They asked the reader as they cited their reason mainly being […]

What’s the password

I came across the list of Gizmodo’s 25 Most Popular Password. I saw one familiar one which I used to use in the development environment as a software developer. With many online accounts to login to and keep track of it is inevitable that humans go the lazy way of using all same passwords for every site. I used to do that too. But the last few years, there have been scams related with hacked social platforms. I find that in the end is you got hacked, but your friends or relatives will pay the price literally if they got scammed from the incident. Most common story is they will masquerade as you and ask for money/gift cards. To ensure I do my utmost to protect the people in my social platform, I started using secure passwords I do not even remember myself. At first, I used a same base with added difference between different sites and platforms. Eventually I got confused too. I ended up with 1Password. Well even though there are the story of Kevin Ross and the hackers who defeated the security of his password management tool, we try our darndest. No security is really 100% as […]
